One of the most popular methods of training in precision engineering is working through an apprenticeship. This type of environment helps to train the future precision engineer in a workshop environment learning about maintenance and engineering skills where it counts – in the workplace. Apprenticeships in precision engineering will usually consist of a combination of structured Foundation Training which takes place “off the job”,followed by some training in key skills and a training programme which is designed for the candidate to qualify with a Level 3 NVQ certificate and Technical certificate.
Qualifications for an Apprentice to Consider
Before being able to qualify to take the NVQ 3 training an apprentice must first of all study and pass the equivalent NVQ 2 certificate. This will give the candidate a good grounding in:
- Working within an engineering environment in a safe manner
- Working within an engineering environment effectively and efficiently
- Getting used to communicating and using technical data and information
- The preparation and use of lathes in various turning operations
- The preparation and use of milling machines
As well as these very typical skills which are definitely work specific related to precision engineering candidates must also learn a range of other skills including;
- IT – Information technology – you won’t get far without significant computer technology know how
- Number application
- Communication skills – between workers, management and clients (if necessary)
- Skills needed to improve their own performance and learning – you never stop learning in the field of precision engineering
- Learning how to work effectively and productively in a team environment
The world of precision engineering is a rather complicated yet exciting one in which to train and work with countless opportunities to further your skills and experience. There are many options open to those who have trained in precision engineering.
